Stop Buying New Drivers: Why Your 90 MPH Swing Already Has 200+ Yards in the Tank
How to Get 40 Extra Yards of Carry Distance Without Swinging a Single MPH Faster.
Every season, I watch amateur golfers drop $600 or more on the newest driver to hit the market. The marketing promises an extra 10 to 15 yards, and the natural instinct is to think that buying better technology—or swinging out of your shoes to generate more clubhead speed—is the only way to reach those deeper parts of the fairway.
But as a coach who looks at swing data all day long, I’m here to tell you a hard truth: Most golfers don’t actually need more speed, and they definitely don't need a new driver. Often, they just need to optimize their launch conditions.
The Magic of Angle of Attack (AoA)
To prove this, let's look at a real-world scenario. Let's take the exact same golfer, using the exact same 11° driver, swinging at the exact same 90 mph. The only variable we are going to change is their Angle of Attack (AoA)—whether the clubhead is traveling downward, level, or upward as it makes contact with the golf ball.
Here is what happens to the carry distance:

The Takeaway: By simply changing the delivery from a downward strike to an upward strike, this golfer gained over 40 yards of carry distance without swinging a single mile per hour faster.
Why Does This Happen?
When you have a negative Angle of Attack with a driver (hitting down on the ball, like you would with an iron), two distance-killing things happen:
- Launch Angle Drops: The ball starts too low to maximize air time.
- Spin Rate Skyrockets: A glancing, downward blow creates excessive backspin, which causes the ball to balloon and drop out of the sky instead of piercing through it.
By shifting to a positive AoA (+4°), you are hitting up on the golf ball. This creates the holy grail of driving distance: high launch and low spin. The ball carries infinitely farther and rolls out more when it hits the turf.
3 Quick Adjustments to Hit Up on the Ball
You don't need an overhaul to change your AoA. Start with these three setup tweaks on the tee box:
- Move the Ball Forward: Ensure the golf ball is positioned just inside your lead heel. If it creeps into the middle of your stance, you are guaranteed to hit down on it.
- Tilt Your Shoulders: At setup, bump your lead hip slightly toward the target and drop your trail shoulder. Your spine should be tilted slightly away from the target. This pre-sets your body to launch the ball upward.
- Tee It Higher: You can't hit up on a ball that is pegged straight into the dirt. Leave at least half the ball visible above the crown of your driver when you set up.
Stop letting the club manufacturers convince you that you need to buy distance. Learn to be efficient with the speed you already have, optimize your launch conditions, and watch your current driver come alive.
